I have heard other laypeople assert that racism developed to justify slavery, and that Britain only abolished slavery because they found a way of making more money off of Black people as waged labourers. It’s very exciting to find what seems like the academic historical origin of this perspective, as a starting point both to assess it as an empirical claim, and to see the effect it has had on contemporary politics.
