Could the historical variability of oppression over time form the basis of a rebuttal to Cone? If God’s character, whether benevolent or not, is taken as consistent, then perhaps the fact that Black people were not always enslaved or oppressed, and the presence of thriving Black societies in various times and places, be taken as evidence that a separate, changeable force (perhaps human free will) is the cause of Black oppression?
